This course examines the racial experience of Latina/o/xs by focusing on how Afro-Latina/o/xs are made visible and counted. Through an investigation of the Census race questions we will consider the politics of racial classification and identification and how these inform the prospect for racial equity for and among Latina/o/xs. Students will learn about race among the Latina/ox/s community in the U.S. and the role of the Census in U.S. society. Students will also familiarize themselves with survey techniques and will learn basic survey data analyses skills.
