The Program
and Requirements
For Majors and
Minors who declared after July 1, 2006
Major
Requirements: The major consists of twelve three credit
courses. The following six courses are required as the core curriculum:

01:836:497 Senior Research Seminar in Latino and Caribbean Studies

Students are required
to take an additional six courses in the department. With the department's
approval, students may replace up to two electives with courses
that are offered by other departments or units of Rutgers University.
In addition, credit may be offered for one course in Spanish language
or composition at the 200 or 300 level. Only one independent study
course may be used to satisfy the requirements, except by students
enrolled in the department's honors program. Only grades of C or
higher will count toward the major requirements.
Minor
Requirements: A minor in Latino and Hispanic Caribbean
studies requires successful completion of six 3-credit courses.
The following courses are required as the core curriculum for the
minor:

In addition, students
in the minor must take two courses at the 300 or 400 level. None
of the courses in the minor may be replaced by courses outside the
department. Only one independent study course can be counted towards
the minor. Only grades of C or higher will count toward the minor
requirements.

Majors and Minors who declared before June 30, 2006. All
students following this plan of study will need to contact their
advisor to discuss new course equivalents.
Major Requirements
Six core courses are
required for all majors. These include:

Seminar in Puerto Rican and Hispanic Caribbean Studies 836:497
Students are required
to take an additional five courses, four of which must be at the
300 or 400 level. With the Department's approval, students may substitute
appropriate courses at the 300 or 400 level that are offered by
other departments in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. A maximum
of two independent study courses may be used to satisfy the requirements
of the major. Independent study courses may not be substituted for
the six required courses. Only courses with a grade of C or better
are accepted toward the major.
Minor Requirements
The minor in Latino and
Hispanic Caribbean Studies requires successful completion of six
three-credit courses; of these, three must be at the 300 or 400
level. Only one independent study course may count toward the minor.
