Second paper assignment--Post-Revolutionary Mexico, 1920-1980s

The next paper is due Wed. Nov 24th. This is the theme:

Retrace the formation of Mexico's state from the 1920s to the 1980s, before the process of democratization began in full. Select one aspect of politics and the state and explain how it related to larger Mexican history. Some possible themes: executive leadership and factional competition, reform policies, incorporation/exclusion, legitimation/nationalism, economic policies, state-society relations, state-labor relations, state-peasant relations. Other themes just as good, check with me if you have an idea.

Make sure to discuss all relevant materials and readings, and cite specific evidence for the entire period. Make sure you account for change over the decades and explain why things change.

Make use of office hours to discuss your approach.

It is crucial that you write this essay in your own words.  Fragments from your book notes strung together do not constitute a paper!  I am giving you sufficient time to review the materials, prepare an outline and meet with me, and I encourage you to do so.  I can make appointments at other hours in case my office hours are not suitable.
