The United States and Latin America: Conflict and Cooperation Across the Americas
Prof. Lauria Santiago
Second Paper Assignment!  Due Date:  Thursday Nov. 18 by 4pm.

It could be argued that the period between 1898 and 1960 represents the US's longest period of undisputed hegemony in Latin America.  How did the US establish and maintain its influence in the region during this period?  What goals did the US have in the region and how, if at all, did they change during these six decades?  What effects did different kinds of relations with the US have upon or within different Latin American countries or regions?  Is it important to draw fundamental distinctions between US-based political actors andUS-based economic actors?  What forms or resistance, adaptation or compliance are evident within Latin America in its varied relations with the US?

Make sure that in answering these questions you work towards developing a coherent argument and make careful, extensive use of the different cases and readings we have examined including Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Guatemala, Mexico and other themes discussed in the readings through week # 11.

Please print this out and bring it to class so we can talk about it and clarify any questions you might have.

You should come to office hours at some point to discuss your approach to this question.  I will announce additional hours soon.

Remember to check out the style manual and plagiarism guidelines!!
