The Research Project
Every student will select a Latin American country (including Haiti, Brazil, Belize, Suriname, the Guyanas) by the second week of classes. You will carry out preliminary research on this country on your own during the first few weeks so you become familiar with its physical and human characteristics, and also by keeping track of its news items relating to the United States every other week in your journal. By week five or six you should have identified major news and data web sites for your country and have explored these materials. These could include magazines or journals that have special issues on your country or publications from the country itself that you order through inter-library loan. After our research lab you will have the skills to use the library and web to further your research into this country using especially journal articles and reference guides. There will be an interim report on your work towards week 8 or 9.
Please feel free to consult with me individually at any point along
the way. It is probably a good idea to do a little work on this project
every week and not let it pile up. Remember, after you become somewhat
familiar with the basic information about your country then start focusing
on its relations with the US. After this, you might be able to narrow
down further your research question.
