The History of Central American and the Hispanic Caribbean
HIST 340
Spring 2000

First Paper theme:

Discuss the construction of Colonialism and Neo-colonialism in the Caribbean up to the 1930s.  Feel free to frame your response in some sort of dialogue (contrast, continuity, etc.) with the long-term history of the region.  Make sure that any discussion of generalizations or large-scale arguments also refers to the evidence deployed in the readings.  Furthermore, make sure that these large-scale, long-term or national/island-level arguments are put in relation to the evidence provided by local level materials and case studies.  What forces and experiences shaped the history of this region and with what effects?  What special, revisionist arguments do the readings present that help us understand the contradictory character of aspects of this history?

Please make sure to follow the formatting and plagiarism guidelines introduced in the syllabus web page.  I encourage you to discuss your approach to the paper with me during office hours well ahead of the due date.  First year students and non-history majors are required to meet with me!!

Due Monday Feb. 28 by 4PM at the History Department Office or via email attachment.
